2009 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen Preview (Watkins Glen International)

Clockwise.

Clockwise.

NASCAR continues its annual summer “Yankee Goodwill Tour” of the Union states, hitting up Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York. Watkins Glen has always been a bit of an oddball on the circuit, at least compared with the rest of the NASCAR fare.

Of course, Watkins Glen is only one of the two road courses in NASCAR, but it’s the only race where you race clockwise, not counter-clockwise like all other tracks. The pit boxes are also on the right side, the only time we get to see that. In Cup Series, it’s also the smallest in terms of seating capacity (41,000), but also one of the five longest (only Daytona, Talladega, Indy and Pocono are longer).

Because it’s a road course and there’s more to explain, we’ll play it a little more seriously this week. (Worked well for Sonoma anyway.)

Beer, Wine & High Spirits: Kasey Kahne Wins Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Infineon

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
NASCAR's version of Fumé Blanc.

NASCAR's version of Fumé Blanc.

Kasey Kahne held off Tony Stewart to pick up an unexpected win at Infineon Raceway. How unexpected was it? It was Kahne’s first Top 10 at Sonoma, his first Top 20 at Sonoma, his first Top 10 at any road course in Cup Series and actually his first Top 10 at any road course at any level of NASCAR.

So, yeah, if you picked Kasey Kahne to win today, you either are crazy, clairvoyant or you couldn’t decide on a pick and you paid good money to hold a double-elimination tournament between 43 liquored-up lemurs and the lemur representing Kasey Kahne won.

I dunno. It’s late. Drunk lemurs are funny. No, I’m not drunk myself. Just tired.

Meet the Ringers: A Look at the Twice-a-Year NASCAR Road Course Drivers

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
Wait. I'm supposed to do what now?

Wait. I'm supposed to do what now?

This weekend is the NASCAR season’s first of two road course tracks—this first one being the annual sojourn to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. Of course, this means that we get a few new faces this weekend, the “road ringers,” those ambiturners who only show up twice a year to substitute for the guys who consider right turns to actually be just awkward 270° left turns.

So, since you may not be familiar with them, we present to you, a quick guide to the NASCAR road ringers.

Running on Empty? Hardly! Mark Martin Wins 2009 LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway

Sunday, June 14th, 2009
Raise your hand if you're Ensure.

Raise your hand if you're Ensure.

Nearly out of gas, Mark Martin won the LifeLock 400 at Michigan, making it to the end as other drivers fell away in the final laps. But Mark is hardly “running on empty,” picking up his third win over the age of 50, but unlike the song (back in ‘65, Mark was, well, seven, not seventeen), Mark seems to know exactly where he’s headed. Although the part about “I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels,” probably fits just fine.

We’ve joked about Martin in the past and about how he’s trying to be something of a second Harry Gant, but Martin looks to be serious about it. Gant had eight wins in his 50s and now Martin has three. The question we jokingly asked before, we ask once again more seriously: can Mark Martin beat Harry Gant’s record for wins over age 50?

Catching Up: The Long Memorial Day Weekend

I'm in way over my head here...

I'm in way over my head here...

I’d like to extend a special thank you to our patient readers. The biggest racing weekend of the year, and I was spending time launching Twitter Motorsports and then when the Coca-Cola 600 was postponed until Monday, I was annoyed because, well, yesterday was the second anniversary of the beginning of wedded bliss for myself and Mrs. Restrictor Plated and we already had plans for the day.

But, you can’t do anything about the weather. So, in lieu of having to bang out five posts from all the activity over the weekend, I’ll summarize everything for you that you need to know about what’s happened between Saturday and today.

Those Unstoppable Hendrick Engines: Mark Martin Wins the 2009 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway

Sunday, May 10th, 2009
Mark Martin is still chasing Harry Gant, just in a different way now.

Mark Martin is still chasing Harry Gant, just in a different way now.

Why let Harry Gant have all the fun in the Centrum Silver set? Harry Gant may have won eight Cup races after the age of 50, but Mark Martin seems determined to give him a run for his money. First he wins at Phoenix, then he signs for another year, and then he wins at Darlington.

And while Mark Martin winning the race is definitely the headline, there were quite a lot of other storylines from a wild race at Darlington.

A Modest Proposal: A Way to Save Talladega Before Someone Gets Killed?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Chicane - Behind the Sun
With a very potentially-dangerous finish to Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega, the question is being raised over and over again, “What can be done to make Talladega safer for fans and drivers?” Carl Edwards didn’t waste time putting too fine a point on it, “NASCAR puts us in this box and we’ll race like this until we kill somebody and NASCAR will change it.”

Well, I have a suggestion. It’s a simple one, quite cost-effective, has been proven to work in the past, would definitely change the dynamic of the race, but would definitely make Talladega safer for everyone. Oh, and you might be able to get rid of the restrictor plate once and for all.

Any guesses?

NASCAR Twitter

NASCAR fans have been embracing Twitter very rapidly. NASCAR has always been a fan-friendly sport and Twitter is helping fans online connect to not just other fans, but also tracks, sponsors, teams and even some drivers.

But for someone unfamiliar with what Twitter has to offer, it can be very overwhelming. So, I present to you a primer to Twitter, specifically geared towards NASCAR fans.

Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen Logo

Seriously? Is this what the sponsorship world in NASCAR is coming to?

Ever since Budweiser dropped sponsorship of this race, the simple, memorable titles like “Bud at The Glen” have disappeared and have been replaced by more and more unusual sponsors.
