The NASCAR Silly Season typically features the driver and sponsor carousel that we’ve all come to know and love, as teams retool for competitive advantage for the upcoming season. However, as we all know, with the spectre of recession looming over our favorite sport—one fueled not just by Sunoco racing fuel, but by the advertising dollars that compel people to say things like that—the silly season has taken on a more ominous feel this year. Hundreds of race team members are out of jobs and everyone is searching longingly for advertising dollars to fund a few more races.  Since NASCAR truly began needing vast amounts of advertising dollars in this decade, there hasn’t been a point where the money flowing into NASCAR has simply dried up as it has now.

Heading into the Daytona 500, here’s where we are at the moment.
