Older Dominion

Older Dominion

Mark Martin has won the pole for this weekend’s Cup race at Indy, continuing the surprising resurgence of over 50 drivers in the sport this year. This, of course, comes on the heels of Ron Hornaday’s fourth win in a row in the Camping World Truck Series last night.

And on top of Mark Martin qualifying on the pole, Bill Elliott, 53, turned in a great performance qualifying fourth.

It’s an old man’s game this year.

Behind Martin, Juan Pablo Montoya, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Bill Elliott, David Reutimann, Brian Vickers, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Reed Sorenson and Clint Bowyer rounded out the Top 10.

Meet the Ringers: A Look at the Twice-a-Year NASCAR Road Course Drivers

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
Wait. I'm supposed to do what now?

Wait. I'm supposed to do what now?

This weekend is the NASCAR season’s first of two road course tracks—this first one being the annual sojourn to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. Of course, this means that we get a few new faces this weekend, the “road ringers,” those ambiturners who only show up twice a year to substitute for the guys who consider right turns to actually be just awkward 270° left turns.

So, since you may not be familiar with them, we present to you, a quick guide to the NASCAR road ringers.

Brian Vickers on the Pole for LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway

To 'eBay?' That sure is a popular name today.

To 'eBay?' That sure is a popular name today.

Brian Vickers is on the pole for the LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway. It’s been a big week for Vickers, as he also just signed a new contract to stay at Red Bull Racing (not to mention a pit stop in Times Square). Michigan is a good track for Vickers and I think he’s a solid Top 10 pick.

Behind Vickers, you have Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, David Reutimann, Kurt Busch, A.J. Allmendinger with a solid run in 6th, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and, no this isn’t an error, John Andretti in 10th.

Bridesmaid No More: Tony Stewart Wins 2009 Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Catch the bouquet!

Catch the bouquet!

Tony Stewart gambled on fuel to the end of the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway, culminating with his first win of the season and the first win for Stewart-Haas. So, finally we can stop treating him like Jim Kelly and Don Mattingly, waiting for him to stop being the runner-up this season, and start focusing on his run for the Sprint Cup championship, now sitting on a 71-point lead.

Catching Up: The Long Memorial Day Weekend

I'm in way over my head here...

I'm in way over my head here...

I’d like to extend a special thank you to our patient readers. The biggest racing weekend of the year, and I was spending time launching Twitter Motorsports and then when the Coca-Cola 600 was postponed until Monday, I was annoyed because, well, yesterday was the second anniversary of the beginning of wedded bliss for myself and Mrs. Restrictor Plated and we already had plans for the day.

But, you can’t do anything about the weather. So, in lieu of having to bang out five posts from all the activity over the weekend, I’ll summarize everything for you that you need to know about what’s happened between Saturday and today.

Do you have a pulse? Congratulations, you are now ahead of Carl Long in the NASCAR Points Standings.

So long, Carl Long.

So long, Carl Long.

Most people think that the really small-time NASCAR efforts (the Kirk Shelmerdines, Norm Bennings and Dexter Beans of the world) are in it just to make some easy cash. Well, if that’s the case, the smaller teams might want to consider the case of Carl Long. Carl was going to start near the front of the Sprint Showdown because of the wacky washed out qualifying rules, but he had an engine change, so he went to the back. Now, I don’t know if they didn’t have a backup and just thought to throw in an old 426 Hemi or something, but they were slapped with a violation I don’t think I’ve ever seen before: 20-5.4A (engine exceeded the maximum engine size of 358.000 cubic inch displacement), something NASCAR takes very seriously. The crew chief was fined a whopping $200,000, driver and crew chief were suspended for 12 races and NASCAR docked them 200 points that they didn’t have to begin with. This puts the team at, yes, -200 points on the season so far. I’ve never heard of a team end up with so many negative points. (Michael Waltrip was docked 100 points back in 2007 during the rocket fuel scandal.)

The lesson for the smaller teams? Carl Long only picked up $5,000 for his appearance in the Sprint Showdown. Be careful what you put in the car.

Vote for Your Driver for the Sprint All-Star Race

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Rock the vote.

Rock the vote.

If you haven’t been voting for your driver for this weekend’s Sprint Cup All-Star Race, you are doing your driver a great disservice. Sprint announced today who the Top 10 drivers in fan voting are right now (but not the order naturally). The ten highest vote getters are (in alphabetical order): A.J. Allmendinger, Bill Elliott, Joey Logano, Jamie McMurray, Juan Pablo Montoya, David Ragan, David Reutimann, Elliott Sadler, Martin Truex Jr. and Michael Waltrip. On top of that, the top eight in standings are separated by less than 20,000 votes and the top two vote getters are separated by less than 4,000 votes. So, get out there and vote! Your vote counts!

NASCAR 2009 All-Star Race Logo

This has been a rough few weeks for the NASCAR family: first we lost David Poole, then we lost Kevin Grubb and then Jeremy Mayfield was suspended for violating the substance abuse policy. So, it’s nice to come off of that and have a week that is strictly all about fun. It’s a home exhibition game for the NASCAR family: All-Star Weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

However, NASCAR’s definition of fun entails all sorts of rules and regulations, pursuant to NASCAR Rulebook Section 13-7-J, “Regulation of Mirth and Merriment,” which requires that fun be “distilled” down to a format that only an mid-level IRS bureaucrat could love. But we fight the power and explain everything to you so you’re prepared for this weekend’s festivities.

Those Unstoppable Hendrick Engines: Mark Martin Wins the 2009 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway

Mark Martin is still chasing Harry Gant, just in a different way now.

Mark Martin is still chasing Harry Gant, just in a different way now.

Why let Harry Gant have all the fun in the Centrum Silver set? Harry Gant may have won eight Cup races after the age of 50, but Mark Martin seems determined to give him a run for his money. First he wins at Phoenix, then he signs for another year, and then he wins at Darlington.

And while Mark Martin winning the race is definitely the headline, there were quite a lot of other storylines from a wild race at Darlington.
