J.J. Yeley and the 41 Not Going to Dover

This storyline may be over before it ever really began.

This storyline may be over before it ever really began.

Overshadowed by the Dale Earnhardt, Jr./Tony Eury, Jr. saga, was the simple notification on J.J. Yeley’s website saying that he and Mayfield Motorsports will not be running this weekend in Dover. No word was given for why specifically, but surely it’s not easy to attract new sponsors to a team helmed by a driver accused of violating drug policy. The only two sponsors Mayfield had previously were the All Sport family of companies, of which CEO Gary Smith is still supposed to be a part owner, and that SmallSponsor.com, which was only running a one-month campaign, far as I know. So, the question is whether All Sport has backed out at this point of the venture or not. If so, that will likely be the end of the team altogether, but that hasn’t been verified yet. Jayski also said that Mayfield Motorsports sent all their employees home early on Tuesday. Also, clearly not a good sign.

This leaves 48 cars on the entry list for Dover.

J.J. Yeley to Fill in for Jeremy Mayfield, Shana Mayfield to Be Owner of Record

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Yes, it's official this time.

Yes, it's official this time.

J.J. Yeley will be taking over for the suspended Jeremy Mayfield in the 41 car starting in this weekend’s Sprint Showdown at Charlotte. This ends a full day of “is he or isn’t he?” speculation caused by an early announcement followed by a public retraction that Yeley would be the new Mayfield Motorsports driver and officially intersects two stories we’ve been following closely: the suspension of Jeremy Mayfield and watching the return of J.J. Yeley’s soul patch. My guess is that it was basically a done deal, but the contract terms might not have been worked out yet, hence the backtracking. Also announced is that Shana Mayfield will be put down as the owner of record, which is interesting, but still one of the two guesses I made on that yesterday.

The Replacements: Who Takes Over for Jeremy Mayfield?

Your face here. Anyone? Bueller?

Your face here. Anyone? Bueller?

Well, we’re starting to move on from the whole Jeremy Mayfield saga a bit. We’ve cycled through the five stages of the Kübler-Ross Model, we’re at acceptance and now we’re thinking about what will happen to the 41 car. From what is left of Mayfield Motorsports, they are saying that they plan to soldier on. But with Mayfield suspended as both a driver and an owner, they need to find a replacement for both to be able to continue…and they need to find one soon.
