Indiana Johnson and the Speeding Ticket of Doom: Jimmie Johnson Wins the Brickyard 400 (Indianapolis Motor Speedway)

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

*smooch*

*smooch*

Jimmie Johnson won the Brickyard 400 at Indy but that wasn’t the big story if you followed the crowds online. A late-race speeding ticket given to Juan Pablo Montoya who had dominated the race up to that point ended his shot at a win.

That has a lot of people calling foul for some reason, including Kyle Petty. I don’t really see why though. Montoya was angry and swore he didn’t do it, but basically it’s his word versus two electronic scoring monitors. That wouldn’t overturn a speeding ticket in any court of law that I’m familiar with.

Beer, Wine & High Spirits: Kasey Kahne Wins Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Infineon

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
NASCAR's version of Fumé Blanc.

NASCAR's version of Fumé Blanc.

Kasey Kahne held off Tony Stewart to pick up an unexpected win at Infineon Raceway. How unexpected was it? It was Kahne’s first Top 10 at Sonoma, his first Top 20 at Sonoma, his first Top 10 at any road course in Cup Series and actually his first Top 10 at any road course at any level of NASCAR.

So, yeah, if you picked Kasey Kahne to win today, you either are crazy, clairvoyant or you couldn’t decide on a pick and you paid good money to hold a double-elimination tournament between 43 liquored-up lemurs and the lemur representing Kasey Kahne won.

I dunno. It’s late. Drunk lemurs are funny. No, I’m not drunk myself. Just tired.

Running on Empty? Hardly! Mark Martin Wins 2009 LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway

Sunday, June 14th, 2009
Raise your hand if you're Ensure.

Raise your hand if you're Ensure.

Nearly out of gas, Mark Martin won the LifeLock 400 at Michigan, making it to the end as other drivers fell away in the final laps. But Mark is hardly “running on empty,” picking up his third win over the age of 50, but unlike the song (back in ‘65, Mark was, well, seven, not seventeen), Mark seems to know exactly where he’s headed. Although the part about “I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels,” probably fits just fine.

We’ve joked about Martin in the past and about how he’s trying to be something of a second Harry Gant, but Martin looks to be serious about it. Gant had eight wins in his 50s and now Martin has three. The question we jokingly asked before, we ask once again more seriously: can Mark Martin beat Harry Gant’s record for wins over age 50?

Cause I'll be rockin this party eight days a week.

Cause I'll be rockin this party eight days a week.

Sometimes I struggle with a tie-in for pick and preview posts, sometimes they just fall into my lap. NASCAR is at Michigan International Speedway this weekend, which is in Brooklyn—albeit not one of the five boroughs, but what better way to present who I feel good about racing in Brooklyn than by being inspired by the rapsmiths who created the seminal song about insomnious journey to a New York borough.

Thusly, we present our week’s Fantasy NASCAR picks: Beastie Boys Edition.

NASCAR Link Roundup for June 8, 2009

The best free-range links, hand-picked at the peak of freshness…usually.

  • ESPN: Penske says he’s set with Dodge deal
A case where the headline really misses the boat in terms of what’s really going on. Roger Penske, soon to be a part-owner of Saturn (pending approval), said that he plans to stick with Dodge as a manufacturer for at least the three remaining years of his contract with them. People who read that might consider that a vote of confidence for Dodge, but it’s not. Three years from now, Penske will finally have his Renault-powered Saturn Aura being sold across the country and will be in a position with R&D to develop brand new engines for his team. He went on to say that the Saturn Aura is “tailor-made for NASCAR,” which is about as big a hint as I’ve ever seen as to what Penske’s aims are with Saturn and NASCAR.
  • NASCAR.com: NASCAR files countersuit against driver Mayfield
You have have seen this already, it slipped by on Friday without my being able to mention it. However, NASCAR has gone ahead and filed a countersuit against Jeremy Mayfield. This is definitely a vindictive move. NASCAR can use this as leverage to keep Mayfield out of the sport almost as long as they want. They keep Mayfield’s money tied up in the courts sorting all this out for as long as his own suit against NASCAR remains active. If Mayfield’s suit gets settled, this will disappear.
  • Jayski: Long speaks to Dave Despain on Wind Tunnel
Carl Long spoke to Dave Despain on Wind Tunnel about everything that’s been going on with him. Jayski has a transcript of the interview up.
  • cawsnjaws: Commercial breakdown, driver focus, and links related to the 2009 Pocono 500
I don’t usually link to these things. If you’re interested in the serious commercial breakdown, you probably know about this. I only link to this for one reason, for people who were really holding FOX to the fire for all the commercial breaks. They haven’t posted data for Dover yet, but at Charlotte, commercials composed 24% of the lengthy broadcast (110 minutes in a 458-minute broadcast), yet for TNT’s first go at NASCAR coverage, commercials composed 28% of their broadcast (67 minutes in a 237-minute broadcast). I only mention this to point out that most people have been silent about the number of commercials for TNT’s coverage, which probably means that FOX’s coverage was fine in this specific regard.

Pocono Fantasy NASCAR Picks (2009 Pocono 500, Pocono Raceway)

Don't nit-pick. I know it's a rack for cribbage, not eight-ball.

Don't nit-pick. I know it's a rack for cribbage, not eight-ball.

The Pocono 500 is at Pocono Raceway this weekend, also known as the world’s largest eight-ball rack. I always loved how it’s called “eight ball” when there are 15 of them. And, yes, I know, it’s because the eight ball is to be dropped last, but it’s confusing how nine ball has nine balls and eight ball has, well, 15.

Look, I don’t know. What other random things can I use to talk about Pocono? It’s perfectly situated, equidistant between the edge of nowhere and the middle of nowhere. And I already burned through the only other Pocono idea I had for the preview post.

They can’t all be winners. And neither can the field. (Ha! Back to NASCAR! Nice save!)

Carl Long Loses His Suspension Appeal

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Good job, NASCAR. Bravo.

Good job, NASCAR. Bravo.

NASCAR has upheld the suspension of poor Carl Long, whose only sin was buying a used engine that blew up on him at the Sprint Showdown at Charlotte. Unfortunately for him, his day job is working for Front Row Motorsports, so he’s going to be sitting at home for the next 12 races, but the suspension only applies for the Cup garage, so hopefully someone can give him a job, maybe in Nationwide or something. Unfortunately for his crew chief, Charles Swing, who was fined $200,000, he’s got to pay that or he can’t come back at all. And if he can’t do it by the end of the year, NASCAR won’t give him a license for 2010.

So, good work NASCAR—way to keep vanquishing the hoi polloi.

UPDATE: NASCAR released a statement. It’s the usual dreck, but this quote stands out:

The Commission reaffirms that the race team is ultimately responsible for all components on the race car, including any supplied by third-party vendors.

They did not add “unless you’re Robby Gordon, if you were Robby Gordon, that’d be okay.”

Of course I'm after your lucky charms! I need them more than you do!

Okay, I had a good run for a while, but I’ve been stinking things up recently. To be fair, you can’t pick who will benefit because of weather—it was more likely for you to win the lottery than it was for us to get the Top 10 last week.

So, I’m breaking out the rabbits feet, the four-to-seven-leaf clovers and my lucky underwear, to divine some positive mojo for my picks this week.
