Wait. I'm supposed to do what now?
This weekend is the NASCAR season’s first of two road course tracks—this first one being the annual sojourn to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. Of course, this means that we get a few new faces this weekend, the “road ringers,” those ambiturners who only show up twice a year to substitute for the guys who consider right turns to actually be just awkward 270° left turns.
So, since you may not be familiar with them, we present to you, a quick guide to the NASCAR road ringers.

Your face here. Anyone? Bueller?
Well, we’re starting to move on from the whole Jeremy Mayfield saga a bit. We’ve cycled through the five stages of the Kübler-Ross Model, we’re at acceptance and now we’re thinking about what will happen to the 41 car. From what is left of Mayfield Motorsports, they are saying that they plan to soldier on. But with Mayfield suspended as both a driver and an owner, they need to find a replacement for both to be able to continue…and they need to find one soon.

For NASCAR classicists, March is like a breath of fresh air: the year’s first stretch of familiarity. Smoke and Bake, Baby
The NASCAR Silly Season typically features the driver and sponsor carousel that we’ve all come to know and love, as teams retool for competitive advantage for the upcoming season. However, as we all know, with the spectre of recession looming over our favorite sport—one fueled not just by Sunoco racing fuel, but by the advertising dollars that compel people to say things like that—the silly season has taken on a more ominous feel this year. Hundreds of race team members are out of jobs and everyone is searching longingly for advertising dollars to fund a few more races. Since NASCAR truly began needing vast amounts of advertising dollars in this decade, there hasn’t been a point where the money flowing into NASCAR has simply dried up as it has now.
Heading into the Daytona 500, here’s where we are at the moment.
