Martin Truex, Jr. has been dinged 25 points after failing post-race inspection at
Chicagoland last weekend. The car’s right rear quarterpanel was found to be too high and Truex was penalized 25 points, the
EGR team was penalized 25 owners’ points and crew chief
Kevin Manlon was fined $25,000 and placed on probation for the rest of the year. This doesn’t affect his position in the drivers’ points standings; he remains in 24th place.

Wait. I'm supposed to do what now?
This weekend is the NASCAR season’s first of two road course tracks—this first one being the annual sojourn to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. Of course, this means that we get a few new faces this weekend, the “road ringers,” those ambiturners who only show up twice a year to substitute for the guys who consider right turns to actually be just awkward 270° left turns.
So, since you may not be familiar with them, we present to you, a quick guide to the NASCAR road ringers.

Hewn from the finest ones and zeroes on the market today:
- Racin’ Today: Smashed Guitar Strikes Sour Chord In Music City
Yeah, all those quotes about Sam Bass being okay with Kyle Busch smashing his guitar? Yeah, not as much as the press-release-prepared quotes from Saturday. Also unhappy: Nashville Superspeedway and race sponsor Federated Auto Parts. (Not to mention Jimmy Spencer and Kyle Petty who both kind of tore him a new one during prerace shows at Pocono.) It’s also worth mentioning that Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing haven’t said a single word about it in their releases, which screams, “we’re hoping this goes away quietly.”
- AP: RPM lets 9 employees go and cuts salaries
Speaking of RPM, they’ve had to let nine employees go and have had salary cuts across the board. Apparently this is tied to the comments from Petty earlier this season about how Chrysler’s Chapter 11 filing has disrupted the financials of the organization. The rumors being floated are that RPM is in serious trouble and considering suspending a team to stay afloat. In addition, since this is the final year of their contract with Dodge, they could be considering making the leap to Toyota. Speaking of which…
- NASCAR.com: Petty, Braun teaming up for five Nationwide races
Braun Racing has worked out a deal with Richard Petty Motorsports to give Elliott Sadler and Kasey Kahne a few races in the Nationwide Series. Sadler will run for Braun at New Hampshire in a few weeks while Kahne will run four races starting at Daytona in July. Braun already fields the 38 car for Jason Leffler, the 32 car for Burney Lamar and Brian Vickers and the 10 car, which has split time between David Reutimann, Kelly Bires, Brian Scott and Marc Davis. They haven’t specified which car will be fielded for RPM, but it’s probably going to be that 10 car.
- The NASCAR Insiders: Is MWR The Best Place For Truex?
The biggest early silly season rumor that’s been floating for months, it seems like, is Martin Truex, Jr. going to Michael Waltrip Racing, possibly to replace Michael himself in the 55 car. NASCAR Insiders evaluates the move from a strategic perspective and considers it more of a “lateral” move. And in the interim, I can’t say I disagree. However, EGR is really a team that feels like it’s treading water, the increasing improvement of Juan Pablo Montoya being the lone bright spot of late. Whereas MWR feels like a team that will be getting better in the next few years (look at the progress they’ve already had this season). Not to mention the TRD support that MWR gets will keep making those Toyotas a lot better.

No longer Army Strong or a Guitar Hero, Almirola will still need to use his Instinct though.
Aric Almirola has finally been able to secure a ride. His
EGR team was
shuttered after
Texas due to lack of sponsorship, but
Billy Ballew has tagged him to drive their 15
Truck Series effort that’s been split between
Shane Sieg and
Brian Ickler this season. This may be just a one-race deal. I don’t have confirmation, but the Texas race is away from the Cup guys next weekend who are at
Pocono. If Ickler is subbing for
Kyle Busch again in the 51. They may have just needed a guy to drive the 15 for one weekend. We’ll see what happens.

That's Ryan, Tony and a question mark. I waste a lot of time in Photoshop to create images you can't see well.
There has been more speculation about who will be the third driver for Stewart-Haas Racing next year. This is amusing to me because there hasn’t even been verification that there will even BE a third team next year.

100% Colombian NASCAR. The fastest Colombian in the world.
Juan Pablo Montoya is your pole-sitter at the Aaron’s 499 at
Talladega.
EGR was nearly the full front row, but
Greg Biffle qualified second, splitting up Montoya and
Martin Truex who will start 3rd. The rest of the Top 10 will be
Sam Hornish,
Clint Bowyer,
Regan Smith,
Mark Martin,
Scott Speed,
Brad Keselowski and
David Ragan.
Starting at the back will be five Dodges. All four of the RPM switched engines because of an oil temperature problem and David Stremme’s engine let go on his qualifying lap.

My goodness. NASCAR fans are being quite the panicky lot lately. With GM and Chrysler determined to try and dig their way out of the problem they dug themselves into, the question of what will happen to NASCAR if something happens to the sponsoring manufacturers has been weighing heavily on the minds of NASCAR fans all season long. I’ve been avoiding writing about this subject, hoping that it would go away or the problem would resolve itself. But, alas, it hasn’t, so here I am.
You want to know what will happen to NASCAR in the aftermath of two of the sport’s four manufacturers having severe economic problems (for the tl;dr crowd)? Almost nothing in the short term, slightly more in the medium term, maybe bigger and potentially even better changes over the long haul.

There’s a lot of talk these days about the sponsorship difficulties that NASCAR teams are having. Obviously, in a down economy, fans are concerned about the prospects of their favorite drivers and teams not having the money to continue competing.
As a public service, I’m starting a five-part series about NASCAR teams and their sponsors. I’m going to look at each team, and each one of their current sponsors and give the best information I can find about who can or will stick it out and who might have problems.
I would like to point out that I am making judgments based on the best, latest information I can find. Privately-held companies are not required to publish financial data, so I simply cannot speculate on them. Additionally, most sponsorship contract terms are kept private, so we simply don’t know how long the terms are and how much more committed sponsors are to their teams. I make judgments based on company health, team and sponsor history and level of involvement in the sport.

Another team falls by the wayside.
Pick a Metallica song, any Metallica song, because
EGR has apparently decided to park
Aric Almirola and the 8 car due to a lack of sponsorship. While they were able to get limited sponsorship through Activision’s
Guitar Hero: Metallica and Cub Cadet, sponsorship opportunities for a team that hasn’t run well and sits outside the Top 35 in owners points are virtually nonexistent.
What sucks most is that sources have told ESPN that 40 or 50 jobs are on the chopping block as a result.

So you thought the Silly Season was over just because the real season began? Well, while I normally wouldn’t post something like this, it’s intriguing enough that it’s worth mentioning. Jayski is reporting via FoxSports.com (so go ahead and file this in the “enormous grain of salt” department now) that Martin Truex, Jr. might be getting in a position to move over to JGR to replace Joey Logano in the 20 car.
