NASCAR Link Roundup for June 20, 2009

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

An all-new Saturday edition of NASCAR Link Roundup.

  • Dustin Long: The $2.5 million mystery
No one has been saying how much the loss of support from GM means to the teams that run Chevys in NASCAR, but thanks to legal documents, we now know how much at least one team currently gets from General Motors. According to court documents, RCR was slated to receive $2.5 million from GM on June 15. Richard Childress didn’t have any comment about the payment, or whether he even received it, and we have no information about how what kind of duration that payment that would be for (one month, two months, four months, etc.), but it is an interesting nugget of information regarding just how much money comes from manufacturer support in NASCAR.
  • Fast Machines: The empire strikes back - FIA to sue FOTA
The F1 mess we mentioned yesterday keeps getting messier. The FIA, Formula 1’s sanctioning body, is now suing FOTA, the breakaway group of teams. Driver Fernando Alonso melodramatically said that he feels “Formula One is dead.” Time will tell, but it isn’t looking good right now.
  • ESPN/AP: Vickers edges Kyle Busch for pole
We mentioned this yesterday, but Scott Speed will sit in Joe Nemechek’s seat for Sunday’s race at Sonoma. This is the second time they’ve done this for a DNQ by Scott. They did the same thing at Darlington earlier this year. Someone asked why would Nemechek keep doing this? Money, of course. If Red Bull pays NEMCO enough money for his ride, Nemechek can race unsponsored another week.
  • Jayski: New Ford engine?
Jayski points to an ESPN Insider (pay site) article about the new FR9 Ford engines that were announced before the season began. The theory is about who’s going to get it first. Ford was apparently considering the Wood Brothers, since they didn’t have Chase aspirations anyway, but now with Jamie McMurray and David Ragan on the outside looking in, they may be prime candidates now. Expect the new engine possibly in August.

Pocono Fantasy NASCAR Picks (2009 Pocono 500, Pocono Raceway)

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Don't nit-pick. I know it's a rack for cribbage, not eight-ball.

Don't nit-pick. I know it's a rack for cribbage, not eight-ball.

The Pocono 500 is at Pocono Raceway this weekend, also known as the world’s largest eight-ball rack. I always loved how it’s called “eight ball” when there are 15 of them. And, yes, I know, it’s because the eight ball is to be dropped last, but it’s confusing how nine ball has nine balls and eight ball has, well, 15.

Look, I don’t know. What other random things can I use to talk about Pocono? It’s perfectly situated, equidistant between the edge of nowhere and the middle of nowhere. And I already burned through the only other Pocono idea I had for the preview post.

They can’t all be winners. And neither can the field. (Ha! Back to NASCAR! Nice save!)

Dover Fantasy NASCAR Picks (2009 Autism Speaks 400, Dover International Speedway)

Of course I'm after your lucky charms! I need them more than you do!

Of course I'm after your lucky charms! I need them more than you do!

Okay, I had a good run for a while, but I’ve been stinking things up recently. To be fair, you can’t pick who will benefit because of weather—it was more likely for you to win the lottery than it was for us to get the Top 10 last week.

So, I’m breaking out the rabbits feet, the four-to-seven-leaf clovers and my lucky underwear, to divine some positive mojo for my picks this week.

Charlotte Fantasy NASCAR Picks (2009 Coca-Cola 600, Lowe’s Motor Speedway)

Time for another radiant metaphor.

Time for another radiant metaphor.

As promised, here are your fantasy NASCAR picks for Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte. This week, we hit the farm to untangle Charlotte’s Web.

Oh, crap, I already used that metaphor in a post title. Well, too late now. Gotta run with what I got, Wilbur.

Those Unstoppable Hendrick Engines: Mark Martin Wins the 2009 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway

Sunday, May 10th, 2009
Mark Martin is still chasing Harry Gant, just in a different way now.

Mark Martin is still chasing Harry Gant, just in a different way now.

Why let Harry Gant have all the fun in the Centrum Silver set? Harry Gant may have won eight Cup races after the age of 50, but Mark Martin seems determined to give him a run for his money. First he wins at Phoenix, then he signs for another year, and then he wins at Darlington.

And while Mark Martin winning the race is definitely the headline, there were quite a lot of other storylines from a wild race at Darlington.

Jeremy Mayfield Suspended for Violating Substance Abuse Policy

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Mayfield didn't qualify for this weekend's race.

Mayfield didn't qualify for this weekend's race.

As we just mentioned, NASCAR has suspended a Sprint Cup driver for violation of NASCAR’s substance abuse policy. It has been announced that it was Jeremy Mayfield. Tania Ganguli and Dustin Long were the first to report this on Twitter. Mayfield will be suspended immediately and indefinitely. He did not qualify for this weekend’s race at Darlington so he wasn’t in the field tonight anyway. Jeremy Mayfield is the first Sprint Cup driver to be suspended for violating the substance abuse policy. More details as we hear them.

UPDATE: Has been verified by NASCAR. Drug has not been identified and we do not know if it was an illicit substance or performance-enhancing of some variety. Was reported as not being alcohol. NASCAR was randomly selected to take the test of two samples. After the first sample failed, the second sample was run for verification and also failed. The suspension is for Mayfield as both driver and owner. Mayfield is not here this weekend as he did not qualify for Darlington. There is no appeal for this test.

UPDATE 2: Test was from Richmond. Final results arrived at noon today, which is why Mayfield was allowed to attempt to qualify this weekend. Tests were not based on suspicion, but were random tests. Mayfield can reapply to NASCAR to be reinstated, but this is done on a case-by-case basis. Remember, Shane Hmiel was reinstated twice. NASCAR’s policy is about abuse of any drug, even legal ones.

UPDATE 3: Worth noting that Mayfield Motorsports is co-owned by Mayfield and Gary Smith, Chairman and CEO of Big Red, Inc. Have heard no response from Mayfield or the team about this yet.

UPDATE 4: Tania Ganguli via Twitter has said that Mayfield said via press release that he thinks a combination of prescription and over the counter medicine reacted to cause him to test positive. Here is the release via the Orlando Sentinel.

NASCAR Suspends Unknown Sprint Cup Driver for Drug Policy Violation

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

According to the Charlotte Observer and That’s Racin’, NASCAR has announced today that a Sprint Cup driver will be suspended immediately and indefinitely for a violation of NASCAR’s substance abuse policy. No driver has been named specifically yet and we are waiting for a press conference at Darlington Raceway in 30 minutes. I’m not going to speculate on this matter at all. As soon as we find out, we’ll pass on the information.
