Older Dominion

Mark Martin has won the pole for this weekend’s Cup race at Indy, continuing the surprising resurgence of over 50 drivers in the sport this year. This, of course, comes on the heels of Ron Hornaday’s fourth win in a row in the Camping World Truck Series last night.

And on top of Mark Martin qualifying on the pole, Bill Elliott, 53, turned in a great performance qualifying fourth.

It’s an old man’s game this year.

Behind Martin, Juan Pablo Montoya, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Bill Elliott, David Reutimann, Brian Vickers, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Reed Sorenson and Clint Bowyer rounded out the Top 10.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Drivers—Ron Hornaday Wins Fourth in a Row at ORP

Go 4 it! Connect Four!

Go 4 it! Connect Four!

Ron Hornaday, a month removed from his 51st birthday, continued the resurgence of the over 50 crowd in NASCAR this season, winning his fourth Truck Series race in a row at ORP. It helped to extend his points lead to 174 over Mike Skinner now, who finished 2nd. If you’re keeping score, that’s two AARP-eligible drivers atop the Truck points standings now. I thought this was supposed to be a developmental series?

Aric Almirola, Dennis Setzer, Colin Braun, James Buescher, Tayler Malsam, Stacy Compton, David Starr and Kyle Busch rounded out the top 10.

Milwaukee’s Best: Carl Edwards Wins the Nationwide Race at the Milwaukee Mile

Carl Edwards wins the Nationwide Series race at the Milwaukee Mile. Kyle Busch led most of the way, only to finish second again. Of course, second to Kyle is “first loser,” which, ironically, is in line with the opinion of a great many NASCAR fans, 88 on their arms or otherwise.

It was a good day for Roush Fenway all around, with all three cars in the Top 5. Ricky Stenhouse led as many laps as Carl did and finished 5th. Erik Darnell ended up with a 4th-place finish, battling Kyle and then Brad Keselowski for the end of the race.

Steven Wallace, Mike Bliss, Stephen Leicht, birthday boy Ron Hornaday, who won earlier in the Truck Series race, and Jason Leffler rounded out the Top 10.

Happy Birthday to Ron! Ron Hornaday Wins Truck Series Race at Milwaukee Mile

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
It's just what I wanted!

It's just what I wanted!

Ron Hornaday didn’t get want he wanted for his birthday today apparently, so he went out and got himself exactly what he wanted: a win in the Truck Series at the Milwaukee Mile. Hornaday dominated the race, leading 180 of 200 laps. No one had anything for him.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Dennis Setzer, Brian Scott, Todd Bodine, James Buescher, Stacy Compton, Tayler Malsam, Colin Braun, David Starr and Terry Cook.

Johnny Benson Seriously Injured in Supermodified Race at Berlin Raceway (Video)

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Glad to hear he's okay.

Glad to hear he's okay.

Johnny Benson is in serious but stable condition after a fiery wreck racing an ISMA Supermodified car at Berlin Raceway. On the first lap, Johnny Benson’s car collided with another driver, where he went driver’s-side first into the outside retaining wall, and then came back down the track, where the car burst into flames. Benson, who was just released from his Red Horse Racing Truck Series ride, had raced in a late model race at Berlin on Wednesday as well. As of this morning, a note on Benson’s fan site said:

As of this morning, JB is awake and alert in a Grand Rapids hospital with at least one broken rib. He is being kept for observation. There is no release time as yet.

And finally, here is video of Benson’s crash from WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids.

Joey Logano on Pole for Meijer 300 Nationwide Series Race at Kentucky

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Wait. Prototype for what? Do I dare ask?

Wait. Prototype for what? Do I dare ask?

Joey Logano is on the pole for the Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway. Interestingly, he was a mere 0.004 seconds faster than his teammate Kyle Busch, who had to race to his car for qualifying after flying in from Michigan following his second place finish in the Truck Series race at MIS.

So, after the Gibbs front row, you have two full rows of rookies with Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, Erik Darnell and Brendan Gaughan. Then Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. in 7th, driving the 16 car for Roush, Trevor Bayne in 8th, driving the 99 car for MWR, Brad Keselowski and Carl Edwards round out the rest of the Top 10.

Quick notes: Brian Keselowski wrecked his only car in practice yesterday, and qualified 41st in a borrowed car (he wasn’t making a serious run) and will probably end up starting-and-parking. Stanton Barrett wrecked his car during the second lap of qualifying (even though he already made the field), so they’re hoping to at least he able to get it fixed up enough to get it out there.

Brains and Braun: Colin Braun Wins Truck Series Race at Michigan

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Doing Texas proud.

Doing Texas proud.

Colin Braun wins the Michigan 200 Truck Series race at Michigan. Kyle Busch dominated much of the race, but clean air was the key and when Kyle Busch got caught behind a lead-lap car towards the end, that was enough to let Colin Braun get around him to pick up the win.

This is Braun’s first win in NASCAR, Ford’s first win in the Truck Series this season (and first since Erik Darnell won this race last year) and the first Texan to win in the Truck Series since David Starr back in 2006.

Behind Braun and Busch, you had Brian Ickler in third, Matt Crafton in fourth and Mike Skinner in fifth.

Chevrolet Dropping Manufacturer Support in Nationwide and Truck Series

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Goodbye Money

Goodbye Money

Another fun announcement, right on the heels of Cup drivers’ trip to Michigan, Chevrolet is cutting factory support in both the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series. The Truck Series is just getting hit left and right. This drops official manufacturer support in the Truck Series down to one: Toyota, with Ford and Dodge having pulled out before the season began. Overall, this is going to seriously affect some of the bigger Nationwide and Truck teams like KHI and JR Motorsports. It’s not the end of the world yet, but things are not looking good for NASCAR’s minor-league system right now.
