*smooch*
Jimmie Johnson won the Brickyard 400 at
Indy but that wasn’t the big story if you followed the crowds online. A late-race speeding ticket given to
Juan Pablo Montoya who had dominated the race up to that point ended his shot at a win.
That has a lot of people calling foul for some reason, including Kyle Petty. I don’t really see why though. Montoya was angry and swore he didn’t do it, but basically it’s his word versus two electronic scoring monitors. That wouldn’t overturn a speeding ticket in any court of law that I’m familiar with.

Older Dominion
Mark Martin has won the pole for this weekend’s Cup race at
Indy, continuing the surprising resurgence of over 50 drivers in the sport this year. This, of course, comes on the heels of
Ron Hornaday’s
fourth win in a row in the
Camping World Truck Series last night.
And on top of Mark Martin qualifying on the pole, Bill Elliott, 53, turned in a great performance qualifying fourth.
It’s an old man’s game this year.
Behind Martin, Juan Pablo Montoya, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Bill Elliott, David Reutimann, Brian Vickers, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Reed Sorenson and Clint Bowyer rounded out the Top 10.
Full starting lineup after the jump.

Tanned, rested and ready.
- The NASCAR Insiders: What In The (Expletive) Is Going On?!?!
I was about to give a roundup of all the rumors going around all of a sudden about the world ending in NASCAR and encouraging calm and care before panicking, but the NASCAR Insiders beat me to it. So, instead of summarizing everything that is SUPPOSEDLY going on, go here. NOW.
- From the Marbles: Kahne-to-Toyota rumors — and denials — flying all over the place
One rumor I did want to single out was the thought that Kasey Kahne could be switched to Toyota power mid-season over at RPM. I don’t buy it for a second. Too expensive. RPM will spend this season trying to stay afloat long enough to get more sponsors and (hopefully, for them) Toyota money in the off-season. It’s also worth noting that George Gillett, who still has a big stake in the company, just sold the Montreal Canadiens for about $450 million (or “aboot” $550 million Canadian). I’m sure he didn’t have “keeping my NASCAR team afloat” as the #1 reason for doing that, but I wonder if there would be any kind of cash infusion there. Gillett is not exactly a hands-on NASCAR owner.
- SPEED: NNS: Vickers In, Lamar Out At Braun Racing
Burney Lamar is apparently out at Braun Racing in the Nationwide Series. Brian Vickers will stay on, but they haven’t decided who will be replacing Lamar for the rest of the Nationwide season. No word has been given on why the move was made.
- Dustin Long: Petty wins again; Hendrick on Junior; A comedic driver
One note Dustin Long mentioned regarded Roush Fenway and the status of the fifth team that has to go before next season. It basically sounds official now that the fifth team, whomever that may be (*cough*Jamie McMurray*cough*), will move over to Yates next year. Which, is not a surprise, but it is interesting to hear someone at Roush finally say so.

NASCAR's version of Fumé Blanc.
Kasey Kahne held off Tony Stewart to pick up an unexpected win at Infineon Raceway. How unexpected was it? It was Kahne’s first Top 10 at Sonoma, his first Top 20 at Sonoma, his first Top 10 at any road course in Cup Series and actually his first Top 10 at any road course at any level of NASCAR.
So, yeah, if you picked Kasey Kahne to win today, you either are crazy, clairvoyant or you couldn’t decide on a pick and you paid good money to hold a double-elimination tournament between 43 liquored-up lemurs and the lemur representing Kasey Kahne won.
I dunno. It’s late. Drunk lemurs are funny. No, I’m not drunk myself. Just tired.

Five more of these and I'll be able to make some stylish curtains out of them.
Brian Vickers is on the pole at
Infineon Raceway. Did you know that this is actually his
fourth pole position on the year? Doesn’t really seem like it, does it? If he picks up one more, he’ll actually have won more poles this season than he’s earned in his entire career up to this season. Go figure.
Kyle Busch sits on the outside of Row 1. He’s followed by Marcos Ambrose, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Martin Truex, Jr., Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler, Boris Said and Matt Kenseth.
Overall, it’s an up-and-down day for Red Bull Racing. Vickers may have been on the pole, but Scott Speed ended up with his third DNQ on the year, putting him further out of reach of that elusive Top 35 in owners points. However, he may end up getting seat time in Joe Nemechek’s ride again (he obviously won’t pick up any owners points for that though). We’ll know more on that soon.
Full starting lineup after the jump.

Raise your hand if you're Ensure.
Nearly out of gas, Mark Martin won the LifeLock 400 at Michigan, making it to the end as other drivers fell away in the final laps. But Mark is hardly “running on empty,” picking up his third win over the age of 50, but unlike the song (back in ‘65, Mark was, well, seven, not seventeen), Mark seems to know exactly where he’s headed. Although the part about “I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels,” probably fits just fine.
We’ve joked about Martin in the past and about how he’s trying to be something of a second Harry Gant, but Martin looks to be serious about it. Gant had eight wins in his 50s and now Martin has three. The question we jokingly asked before, we ask once again more seriously: can Mark Martin beat Harry Gant’s record for wins over age 50?

To 'eBay?' That sure is a popular name today.
Brian Vickers is on the pole for the LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway. It’s been a big week for Vickers, as he also just signed a new contract to stay at Red Bull Racing (not to mention a pit stop in Times Square). Michigan is a good track for Vickers and I think he’s a solid Top 10 pick.
Behind Vickers, you have Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, David Reutimann, Kurt Busch, A.J. Allmendinger with a solid run in 6th, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and, no this isn’t an error, John Andretti in 10th.
Click below for the full starting lineup.

Cause I'll be rockin this party eight days a week.
Sometimes I struggle with a tie-in for pick and preview posts, sometimes they just fall into my lap. NASCAR is at
Michigan International Speedway this weekend, which is in Brooklyn—albeit not one of the five boroughs, but what better way to present who I feel good about racing in Brooklyn than by being inspired by the rapsmiths who created the
seminal song about insomnious journey to a New York borough.
Thusly, we present our week’s Fantasy NASCAR picks: Beastie Boys Edition.

Links melt in your mouse, not in your RAM.
- ESPN: Sources: Vickers gets multiyear deal
Looks like Brian Vickers is getting a multiyear deal to stay at Red Bull Racing. It seems to be a good fit for both of them. Terms were not disclosed.
- Bleacher Report: Timothy Peters, Chad Kenderick, and Strutmasters.com Have a New Home
A day after 2008 Truck Series champ Johnny Benson was let go by Red Horse Racing, RHR went and brought over Timothy Peters from Premier Racing. Something smells about this. How did Hamlet put it? “The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables.” I have now used Shakespeare on a NASCAR blog. Congratulations, you have reached the end of the internet. Could the last person to leave please lock the door behind them?
- NASCAR.com: Said to drive independent car of Carter at Sonoma
NASCAR’s version of “Who’s on First?”: “Who Said?” “I said, ‘Said said.’” Funnier in my head. Anyway, the back-and-forth, will-he, won’t-he saga of whether or not Boris Said would have a ride at Sonoma is over. Boris Said will pilot the 08 car put together by John Carter (not the one “of Mars“) and…HOLY CRAP, what is up with Boris’s picture on that article?? Is he trying to hypnotize potential sponsors? “You are getting…sleeeeepyyyy. You’re eyelids are getting heavier…and heavier. The deck lid costs fifty thoooooousand dollars. Please make checks out to…Boooooooris Saaaaaaid.”
- NASCAR.com: For $20, fans can sponsor Kenny Wallace’s race car
Got $20 laying around? Now you too can sponsor Kenny Wallace’s race car (or at least get your name on it). My favorite quote from the article: “‘We want everyone to know that this is a completely voluntary program,’ Wallace said.” Good to know that Kenny Wallace’s reign of terror, going door-to-door, beating up people who don’t pay him $20 is over.
- NASCAR Insiders: Ask The Insiders Wednesday 27
Finally, I really can’t recommend The NASCAR Insiders enough. And I really can’t recommend their “Ask the Insiders” segment that they do each week enough. You should be following them, if you aren’t already.

Hewn from the finest ones and zeroes on the market today:
- Racin’ Today: Smashed Guitar Strikes Sour Chord In Music City
Yeah, all those quotes about Sam Bass being okay with Kyle Busch smashing his guitar? Yeah, not as much as the press-release-prepared quotes from Saturday. Also unhappy: Nashville Superspeedway and race sponsor Federated Auto Parts. (Not to mention Jimmy Spencer and Kyle Petty who both kind of tore him a new one during prerace shows at Pocono.) It’s also worth mentioning that Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing haven’t said a single word about it in their releases, which screams, “we’re hoping this goes away quietly.”
- AP: RPM lets 9 employees go and cuts salaries
Speaking of RPM, they’ve had to let nine employees go and have had salary cuts across the board. Apparently this is tied to the comments from Petty earlier this season about how Chrysler’s Chapter 11 filing has disrupted the financials of the organization. The rumors being floated are that RPM is in serious trouble and considering suspending a team to stay afloat. In addition, since this is the final year of their contract with Dodge, they could be considering making the leap to Toyota. Speaking of which…
- NASCAR.com: Petty, Braun teaming up for five Nationwide races
Braun Racing has worked out a deal with Richard Petty Motorsports to give Elliott Sadler and Kasey Kahne a few races in the Nationwide Series. Sadler will run for Braun at New Hampshire in a few weeks while Kahne will run four races starting at Daytona in July. Braun already fields the 38 car for Jason Leffler, the 32 car for Burney Lamar and Brian Vickers and the 10 car, which has split time between David Reutimann, Kelly Bires, Brian Scott and Marc Davis. They haven’t specified which car will be fielded for RPM, but it’s probably going to be that 10 car.
- The NASCAR Insiders: Is MWR The Best Place For Truex?
The biggest early silly season rumor that’s been floating for months, it seems like, is Martin Truex, Jr. going to Michael Waltrip Racing, possibly to replace Michael himself in the 55 car. NASCAR Insiders evaluates the move from a strategic perspective and considers it more of a “lateral” move. And in the interim, I can’t say I disagree. However, EGR is really a team that feels like it’s treading water, the increasing improvement of Juan Pablo Montoya being the lone bright spot of late. Whereas MWR feels like a team that will be getting better in the next few years (look at the progress they’ve already had this season). Not to mention the TRD support that MWR gets will keep making those Toyotas a lot better.
