Older Dominion

Older Dominion

Mark Martin has won the pole for this weekend’s Cup race at Indy, continuing the surprising resurgence of over 50 drivers in the sport this year. This, of course, comes on the heels of Ron Hornaday’s fourth win in a row in the Camping World Truck Series last night.

And on top of Mark Martin qualifying on the pole, Bill Elliott, 53, turned in a great performance qualifying fourth.

It’s an old man’s game this year.

Behind Martin, Juan Pablo Montoya, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Bill Elliott, David Reutimann, Brian Vickers, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Reed Sorenson and Clint Bowyer rounded out the Top 10.

Beer, Wine & High Spirits: Kasey Kahne Wins Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Infineon

NASCAR's version of Fumé Blanc.

NASCAR's version of Fumé Blanc.

Kasey Kahne held off Tony Stewart to pick up an unexpected win at Infineon Raceway. How unexpected was it? It was Kahne’s first Top 10 at Sonoma, his first Top 20 at Sonoma, his first Top 10 at any road course in Cup Series and actually his first Top 10 at any road course at any level of NASCAR.

So, yeah, if you picked Kasey Kahne to win today, you either are crazy, clairvoyant or you couldn’t decide on a pick and you paid good money to hold a double-elimination tournament between 43 liquored-up lemurs and the lemur representing Kasey Kahne won.

I dunno. It’s late. Drunk lemurs are funny. No, I’m not drunk myself. Just tired.

Brian Vickers on the Pole for 2009 Toyota/SaveMart 350 Race at Infineon Raceway (Sonoma)

Five more of these and I'll be able to make some stylish curtains out of them.

Five more of these and I'll be able to make some stylish curtains out of them.

Brian Vickers is on the pole at Infineon Raceway. Did you know that this is actually his fourth pole position on the year? Doesn’t really seem like it, does it? If he picks up one more, he’ll actually have won more poles this season than he’s earned in his entire career up to this season. Go figure.

Kyle Busch sits on the outside of Row 1. He’s followed by Marcos Ambrose, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Martin Truex, Jr., Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler, Boris Said and Matt Kenseth.

Overall, it’s an up-and-down day for Red Bull Racing. Vickers may have been on the pole, but Scott Speed ended up with his third DNQ on the year, putting him further out of reach of that elusive Top 35 in owners points. However, he may end up getting seat time in Joe Nemechek’s ride again (he obviously won’t pick up any owners points for that though). We’ll know more on that soon.

Full starting lineup after the jump.

Brian Vickers on the Pole for LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway

To 'eBay?' That sure is a popular name today.

To 'eBay?' That sure is a popular name today.

Brian Vickers is on the pole for the LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway. It’s been a big week for Vickers, as he also just signed a new contract to stay at Red Bull Racing (not to mention a pit stop in Times Square). Michigan is a good track for Vickers and I think he’s a solid Top 10 pick.

Behind Vickers, you have Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, David Reutimann, Kurt Busch, A.J. Allmendinger with a solid run in 6th, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and, no this isn’t an error, John Andretti in 10th.

Tony Stewart Living: Sprint All-Star Challenge at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Aftermath

Swagger like us.

Swagger like us.

Tony Stewart wins the Sprint Cup All-Star Race at Charlotte, picking up not just his first All-Star Race victory and a million bucks, but also the first item for the Stewart-Haas Racing trophy case.

So, as big as this victory is, if you find Tony passed out somewhere in the Charlotte area, know that you won’t have to give him any cab fare to get back home. He’s got plenty.

Jimmie Johnson on the Pole for the Sprint All-Star Race

Friday, May 15th, 2009

That's thinking with your dipstick, Jimmie.

That's thinking with your dipstick, Jimmie.

Jimmie Johnson will be on the pole for the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Saturday night. The rest of the starting order will be Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Bobby Llamabonte, Kasey Kahne, Kevin Harvick (still a winner with Nitrogen-enriched Shell gasoline) and Brad Keselowski rounded out the Top 10. Greg Biffle (11th), Ryan Newman (12th), Kyle Busch (13th), Carl Edwards (14th), Jeff Burton (15th) and Clint Bowyer (16th) all accrued various penalties. Tony Stewart forgot that the pit stop portion was for four tires, not two, and had to reverse to rectify that. He’ll start 15th. Denny Hamlin lost the transmission and will start 18th.

NASCAR 2009 All-Star Race Logo

This has been a rough few weeks for the NASCAR family: first we lost David Poole, then we lost Kevin Grubb and then Jeremy Mayfield was suspended for violating the substance abuse policy. So, it’s nice to come off of that and have a week that is strictly all about fun. It’s a home exhibition game for the NASCAR family: All-Star Weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

However, NASCAR’s definition of fun entails all sorts of rules and regulations, pursuant to NASCAR Rulebook Section 13-7-J, “Regulation of Mirth and Merriment,” which requires that fun be “distilled” down to a format that only an mid-level IRS bureaucrat could love. But we fight the power and explain everything to you so you’re prepared for this weekend’s festivities.

Those Unstoppable Hendrick Engines: Mark Martin Wins the 2009 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway

Mark Martin is still chasing Harry Gant, just in a different way now.

Mark Martin is still chasing Harry Gant, just in a different way now.

Why let Harry Gant have all the fun in the Centrum Silver set? Harry Gant may have won eight Cup races after the age of 50, but Mark Martin seems determined to give him a run for his money. First he wins at Phoenix, then he signs for another year, and then he wins at Darlington.

And while Mark Martin winning the race is definitely the headline, there were quite a lot of other storylines from a wild race at Darlington.

"What in the hell do you think you're doing here? This is a closed set!"

On Monday, we lost a great one, Dom DeLuise passed away at the age of 75. While he’ll always hold a special place for me with his Mel Brooks movies, many a NASCAR fan will remember him more for his role in The Cannonball Run. Featuring the work of Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jackie Chan, Jamie Farr, not to mention Terry Bradshaw and Mel Tillis driving a street legal replica of Donnie Allison’s old Hawaiian Tropic Number 1 car, Dom DeLuise played Burt’s mechanic, Victor Priznim, who had a superhero alter-ego: Captain Chaos.

So, as is our way of wackily honoring our fallen heroes, and in the spirit of—DUN, DUN, DUUUUUUNNNNN—Captain Chaos, we present an all-Captains version of our Darlington Fantasy NASCAR picks.

The 10 Greatest Pontiacs in NASCAR

Pontiac Racing

General Motors, in an effort to paddle against the currents that are slowly sucking them down the drain, is shuttering the Pontiac badge for good. Inspired by Jalopnik’s 10 Greatest Pontiacs feature, I wanted to take a little trip down memory lane as we say goodbye to the red arrowhead with the 10 Greatest Pontiacs in NASCAR.
