More Mayfield.
Here’s the latest on the
Jeremy Mayfield saga that I’m tired of following, but is still the biggest news story right now. The Fourth Circuit U.S. Appeals Court has overturned the stay of Mayfield’s suspension by NASCAR. That’s basically as far as he can go legally because the Supreme Court won’t hear a stay like that.
IANAL, but all this does effectively is keep Mayfield suspended until his suit against NASCAR gets underway.
But that’s all a moot point anyway, because it’s been announced today that the assets of Mayfield Motorsports have been sold to John Carter, who has been putting together a team for Terry Labonte and Boris Said in the 08 car. That’s interesting to me because Carter was preparing Fords for Boris, but Mayfield’s operation was with Toyotas and Labonte will be running an unsponsored Simo Carter née Mayfield Toyota this weekend at Indy.

Mike Mulhern: Jeremy Mayfield’s team shows up at Indy, with Terry Labonte as driver…and a new team owner. And NASCAR gets a legal victory in Richmond.

-25
Martin Truex, Jr. has been dinged 25 points after failing post-race inspection at
Chicagoland last weekend. The car’s right rear quarterpanel was found to be too high and Truex was penalized 25 points, the
EGR team was penalized 25 owners’ points and crew chief
Kevin Manlon was fined $25,000 and placed on probation for the rest of the year. This doesn’t affect his position in the drivers’ points standings; he remains in 24th place.

New Member: Fraternal Order of New Fathers
Hey, what better way to jump right back into NASCAR blogging than transitioning to
another new father story.
Matt Kenseth and wife Katie have had their child, a girl named Kaylin Nicola Kenseth. This is according to
Ross Kenseth’s Twitter updated yesterday. No further details at the moment, but as a father of a newborn, congrats to the Kenseth family and looking forward to seeing the first pics.

Scratch that. P.J. Jones *will* be at Sonoma.
We mentioned in our recent profile on the
NASCAR road ringers that among the regular NASCAR road ringers who would be absent at
Sonoma was veteran
P.J. Jones. Well, scratch that. An update to the Sonoma entry list was released and, there’s P.J. Jones on the new list, in a second entry for…
Robby Gordon Motorsports? P.J. Jones is in the entry list in the 4 car sponsored by Jim Beam and Menard’s, just like
Robby. Haven’t seen any official announcement as to why Robby decided to give a second ride to P.J. for this race (this is the first time I know of that RGM has fielded a second Sprint Cup car), but they are buddies and have paired up before. Back in 2007 in that crazy
Busch Series race at
Montreal where Robby Gordon punted
Marcos Ambrose, ignored all the black flags and was disqualified, NASCAR suspended him for the next Cup race at
Pocono, P.J. Jones filled in for Robby that weekend.

Wait. I'm supposed to do what now?
This weekend is the NASCAR season’s first of two road course tracks—this first one being the annual sojourn to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. Of course, this means that we get a few new faces this weekend, the “road ringers,” those ambiturners who only show up twice a year to substitute for the guys who consider right turns to actually be just awkward 270° left turns.
So, since you may not be familiar with them, we present to you, a quick guide to the NASCAR road ringers.

Mustangs and Challengers in NASCAR?
Of all the rumors I’ve heard all year, this is the one I most hope turns out to be true. Lee Spencer, FOX Sports’s NASCAR writer says she’s talked to an unnamed NASCAR official who says that when NASCAR rolls out a “Car of Tomorrow” to the
Nationwide Series, ostensibly for 2010, that they’ll be building it on the style of the “
pony cars.” That means for Nationwide, Ford could switch to Mustang and Dodge would become the Challenger. (Though, apparently, Chevrolet is not ready to market the Camaro this way…yet.) And you may be thinking sarcastically, “Woo. Different decals,” but you’d be wrong. NASCAR is hoping to roll back a lot of genericization that the Sprint Cup COT has and start creating real differentiation between the manufacturers again, realizing that both the fans and manufacturers
hate the COT. However, NASCAR doesn’t plan on scrapping the Cup COT, but if the Nationwide COT is successful, better changes will roll forward. The deadline for submitting designs is June 26. Hopefully, we’ll hear more after that point.
Overall, this is a very good thing and might save the moribund series from atrophy.

Glad to hear he's okay.
Johnny Benson is in serious but stable condition after a fiery wreck racing an ISMA Supermodified car at
Berlin Raceway. On the first lap, Johnny Benson’s car collided with another driver, where he went driver’s-side first into the outside retaining wall, and then came back down the track, where the car burst into flames. Benson, who was just released from his
Red Horse Racing Truck Series ride, had raced in a late model race at Berlin on Wednesday as well. As of this morning, a
note on Benson’s fan site said:
As of this morning, JB is awake and alert in a Grand Rapids hospital with at least one broken rib. He is being kept for observation. There is no release time as yet.
And finally, here is video of Benson’s crash from WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids.

Dodge’s role in NASCAR right now looks extremely unclear. While recent manufacturer speculation has focused more on General Motors and Chevrolet, their future still looks extremely bright in the sport, while Dodge has had many difficulties since re-entering the sport back in 2001. No Sprint Cup Championships, no Sprint Cup manufacturer championships and no Nationwide Series Championships.
Couple that with Roger Penske’s purchase of Saturn and speculation that Penske Racing could leave Dodge and the latest news that airs the possibility that RPM could switch to Toyota for next season and you have to wonder, what’s next for Dodge?
Is there a “next” for Dodge?

Hill of beans.
You want to know how bad the state of sponsorship affairs is in the
Camping World Truck Series? Even its reigning champion can’t secure funding. That’s right
Johnny Benson is parked.
Red Horse Racing can’t find sponsorship for Benson’s Toyota Tundra. RHR thought they had a sponsor going into this season, but the economic downturn ended up causing them to back out and Benson’s been driving the 1 truck unsponsored for most of the season. His teammate
T.J. Bell is okay, however, because he has at least
some additional sponsorship to keep him going, but he’s run unsponsored for half the season so far as well, so there has to be some concern that he can keep going as well.
