Brett Moffitt Becomes Youngest Driver to Win in Camping World Series

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

NASCAR Camping World Series Logo Brett Moffitt won at South Boston Speedway Saturday night in the Camping World East Series South Boston 150. And at the age of 16 years, 9 months and 23 days, Moffitt becomes the youngest driver to win a Camping World Series race, eclipsing the previous mark set by Joey Logano, now, obviously, a Sprint Cup regular. Moffitt had previously broken the record for youngest pole winner in a Camping World Series (again breaking Logano’s record) at the season inaugural at Greenville Pickens Speedway in South Carolina. Part-time RCR development driver Ryan Gifford finished second and Ryan Truex, younger brother of Martin Truex, Jr. and MWR development driver finished third. Points leader Jody Lavender was fourth and Max Gresham, making his Camping World Series debut for JGR, finished fifth.

Life of Brian: Brian Scott Wins the AAA Insurance 200 Truck Series Race at Dover

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

And not one single lazy Great Scott joke.

And not one single lazy Great Scott joke.

Brian Scott wins the AAA Insurance 200 Camping World Truck Series race at Dover. However, the real story was the power and efficiency in the failure rate of front right tires: failure so massive and pervasive that hack writers could consider comparing it to Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812. (Ironically, you could easily use Tchaikovsky’s commemorative overture in montages of both failures.)

Too obtuse?

The tire failures ultimately sunk the chances of Ron Hornaday early and Kyle Busch and Colin Braun late.

Brad Keselowski Steals the Joe Gibbs Show at the 2009 Nationwide Race at Dover

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

That's the second time this year he's snuck in to get a win at the end.

That's the second time this year he's snuck in to get a win at the end.

Brad Keselowski took advantage of late contact between Kyle Busch and Joey Logano after Kyle lost a tire to steal a win at the Heluva Good! 200 Nationwide Series race at Dover that was dominated by the two Joe Gibbs Racing drivers. Keselowski has only led 29 laps at all levels of NASCAR this year, but he’s still managed to pick up two wins.

Joey Logano finished second, Clint Bowyer finished third. Brian Vickers and Carl Edwards round out the Top 5. Kyle Busch ended up finishing 17th.

Yes, we all had a laugh thinking about what “key role” Tony Eury, Jr. had in store for him at Hendrick Motorsports after being let go as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt, Jr., but Hendrick just sent out a press release that gives us a real answer. Starting Tuesday, Eury will be accompanying Jimmie Johnson, overseeing road course testing at a two-day session at Carolina MotorSports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. The press release also went on to say that Eury will continue doing crew chief duties, but for Brad Keselowski in his Nationwide schedule for Hendrick.

Aric Almirola Gets a Ride in the Truck Series

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

No longer Army Strong or a Guitar Hero, Almirola will still need to use his Instinct though.

No longer Army Strong or a Guitar Hero, Almirola will still need to use his Instinct though.

Aric Almirola has finally been able to secure a ride. His EGR team was shuttered after Texas due to lack of sponsorship, but Billy Ballew has tagged him to drive their 15 Truck Series effort that’s been split between Shane Sieg and Brian Ickler this season. This may be just a one-race deal. I don’t have confirmation, but the Texas race is away from the Cup guys next weekend who are at Pocono. If Ickler is subbing for Kyle Busch again in the 51. They may have just needed a guy to drive the 15 for one weekend. We’ll see what happens.

NASCAR’s Substance Abuse Policy Now a Matter of Public Record

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

This really isn't as revealing as you might think.

This really isn't as revealing as you might think.

Entered into evidence as part of Jeremy Mayfield’s lawsuit against NASCAR, the Charlotte Observer has gotten ahold of NASCAR’s official substance abuse policy document. Now, I want to say first off that this isn’t anywhere NEAR as interesting as you might think. In fact, it reads pretty much like that dull document you might have gotten from your own employer—the one you probably skimmed over and thought, “This doesn’t apply to me.” Well, looking through it, it does make me wonder if Jeremy Mayfield thought the same thing—didn’t think twice about it, maybe signed an approval saying he read and understood it, and now look where he is.

Report: Jeremy Mayfield Used Amphetamines and the Bigger Problem of Legal Drugs in NASCAR

Since amphetamines have a high potential for abuse, Adderall should only be prescribed as part of an overall multimodal treatment program for ADHD with close physician supervision. --Adderall Advertisement

Many have been wanting an answer from NASCAR as to what Jeremy Mayfield has been accused of taking. According to Charlotte television station WCNC, we may have an answer. They are reporting that Mayfield’s attorney has said that NASCAR has accused him of using amphetamines and are filing a lawsuit against NASCAR and testing lab Aegis, “accusing NASCAR of unfair trade practices, negligence, defamation, breach of contract and breach of the Persons with Disabilities Act.” It goes on to say “Mayfield has said in the past that he has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.”

This answers one basic question, but raises many more.

J.J. Yeley and the 41 Not Going to Dover

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

This storyline may be over before it ever really began.

This storyline may be over before it ever really began.

Overshadowed by the Dale Earnhardt, Jr./Tony Eury, Jr. saga, was the simple notification on J.J. Yeley’s website saying that he and Mayfield Motorsports will not be running this weekend in Dover. No word was given for why specifically, but surely it’s not easy to attract new sponsors to a team helmed by a driver accused of violating drug policy. The only two sponsors Mayfield had previously were the All Sport family of companies, of which CEO Gary Smith is still supposed to be a part owner, and that SmallSponsor.com, which was only running a one-month campaign, far as I know. So, the question is whether All Sport has backed out at this point of the venture or not. If so, that will likely be the end of the team altogether, but that hasn’t been verified yet. Jayski also said that Mayfield Motorsports sent all their employees home early on Tuesday. Also, clearly not a good sign.

This leaves 48 cars on the entry list for Dover.

Of course I'm after your lucky charms! I need them more than you do!

Of course I'm after your lucky charms! I need them more than you do!

Okay, I had a good run for a while, but I’ve been stinking things up recently. To be fair, you can’t pick who will benefit because of weather—it was more likely for you to win the lottery than it was for us to get the Top 10 last week.

So, I’m breaking out the rabbits feet, the four-to-seven-leaf clovers and my lucky underwear, to divine some positive mojo for my picks this week.
